Question. Francheska:" it looks like that compact streps grow slower. Is it true?"
Pavel:" Mini grow more slowly according to their size. However, leaf from standard streps and mini streps reach adult size at the same time. Another words, mini start flowering at the same time. Problems with mini is that if you want to propagate it, you do not have as much leave mass as for normal one.
Francheska:" what is the difference between compact and mini streps?"
Pavel:" I do not think that mini streps exist. Mini streps should have leaves not more 10 cm. I obtained from US a few streps that been called mini. Indeed they had leaves about 10 cm in length. I call streps younger than one-year-old a starter plant. However, when they were two years old (adult plant) they grow much larger leaves 15-20 cm. They all become compact.
I do not think that it is impossible to get mini streps. However, I think that it would be impossible to obtain it by traditional hybridization. "
Another question:" Pavel, you grow your plant in ideal condition in greenhouse. We grow our plants on a window sill "
What I noticed that nobody abroad grow adult Streptocarpus plant. They have another practice. They separate small rosette or grow from leaves another young plant. So, the plant never reaches adult stage.
I have Streptocarpus parviflorus subsp. soutpansbergensis from South Africa.
it is really very small. and the leaves are very small.
it is the smallest species streps.
And now it is a year old. Its largest leaves are 10 cm.
It now sits in a 80g cup.
But I'm sure that in a year it will have leaves 15-20 cm long. So, technically it could be names "compact"
